Holiday traditions are a great way to bring a family together and keep them together. It is so disappointing to have someone say that they have no special Christmas memory. There are so many different memories that parents can start that will last with their children for years to come.
As the father of seven children, I know first hand how family traditions have affected my children. Three of my children are now adults and they reminisce every Christmas about their favorite family activities and traditions. Traditions that they will continue with their families. The expectations of the Christmas season are that it is a time to be spent with family, friends and laughter, but for people in the grieving process, the holidays can exacerbate the feelings of grief, and heighten the solitude one already feels. While grief is unique to each person mourning, teddy offers some tips for getting through the holiday season, and finding joy in spite of pain and loss.
1. Be kind to yourself. Recognize that grief takes time, and your body has had a major blow to it. Grief can be hard on the body. If you suffered a broken leg, you would slow down, and stay off of the leg. When you suffer a broken heart, you need to do the same. Pamper yourself. If everything doesn’t get done, it doesn’t get done. It’s okay. The holiday season can be hectic, and rushed. When you are grieving, you need to heal and go slow. Give yourself permission. Yes, ’tis the Season of giving and receiving. This is the time of year when more people have a heart for giving. They always have a heart for receiving.
We all love to receive but in order to receive you must give. In my opinion a giver is a receiver. John D Rockefeller was a giver, as was J Paul Getty. You may have heard that Bill and Melinda Gates are big givers. Warren Buffett has given away a fortune because he believes in the rule of giving. You know that Oprah Winfrey gives from the heart. Each of these people knows that you can’t beat giving because you can’t receiver without it. Read the rest of this entry »

Were Ancient Shaman magic mushroom gatherers early Santa’s? From the Shamanistic traditions of the tribal people of the pre-Christian Northern part of Europe it is suggested that our many Christmas traditions including Santa Claus can be related back to this time and these ancient people. The Shamans were consumers of what we would call ‘magic’ mushrooms yet to them they were sacred mushrooms. These amanita muscaria mushrooms (red and white in color) are associated with transcendental experiences and insight. These mushrooms contain hallucinogenic compounds which gave off affects such as sensations of flying and size distortion. The Shamans traditional animal were reindeer and there were countless tales of flying reindeer or winged reindeer transporting them to the ‘cosmic’ realm or what we may refer to as the ‘heavenly’ world. Getting the perfect present for that somebody on our list is not as hard as it may seem but of coarse we should always take in to consideration that perfection takes on a different meaning in everybody’s mind. For instance there are those whose love for winter sports make them the perfect candidates to receive a lovely new pair of skis or poles however if I be the case then this would be the furthest thing from my desires as I do solemnly detest anything that may have the slightest connection with winter sports. This I say not with intension of offending those who ski or even winter sports as it maybe my foolishness that prevents me from enjoying them but with the aim of giving an example of how “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Naturally this philosophy may also be applied to the female gender not only the males because in short what is perfect for one will not by necessity be perfect for another.
