As you are no doubt aware, Christmas is the time of year at which Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The period of the year around Christmas has however had a spiritual significance even in pre-Christian times. The Winter Solstice falls sometime between December 20th and December 23rd each year - this is the day of the year when the day (in the Northern hemisphere) is at its shortest, the night at its longest, and after which, days gradually become longer again and nights shorter.
