In Denmark, the build-up to Christmas is called adventstid. Candles glow in windows, families count down the Sundays of Advent, and children look for the next surprise in their calendars. The atmosphere is often summed up by the Danish word hygge: enjoying warmth, company and the small comforts of winter.
One of the most distinctive decorations is the flettet julehjerte, a woven paper heart. Red and white hearts hang from Christmas trees alongside flags, lights and handmade ornaments. Many families also keep a nisse, a mischievous little Christmas figure, in their stories and decorations. Some leave a bowl of rice porridge for the household nisse.
Christmas Eve, December 24, is the main celebration for many Danish families. After dinner, people may sing and dance around the decorated tree before opening presents. Dinner often includes roast duck or pork, potatoes and red cabbage, though every family has its own menu.
Dessert can turn into a game. Risalamande, a chilled rice pudding with whipped cream and chopped almonds, is served with warm cherry sauce. One whole almond is hidden in the bowl. Whoever finds it receives a small almond prize. The trick is to keep the almond hidden until everyone has finished eating.
